What it is actually like
Small enough that the people making credit decisions sit near the people answering the phone. We fund our own loans, which means the answer given on a call is the answer — there is no funder to defer to and no committee meeting on Tuesday. It also means mistakes are ours, which tends to concentrate the mind.
Who tends to do well here
People who can hold a real conversation with a business owner having a bad month. Most of our clients are not shopping around; they have a deadline and they are worried. The job is to work out quickly whether we can help, say so plainly either way, and not waste their week if the answer is no.
